Tires are one of the many key components of our vehicle that keep us safe on the road. But the question almost everybody asks is ‘How do I know when my tires should be replaced?’ If you don’t happen to have a mechanic in the family, one test that you can use to check your tire’s tread is the Penny Test.
Start by placing a penny upside down with Lincoln facing you in the center of the tread (at the thickest part of the tire).
- If you cannot see the hair on top of Lincoln’s head, your tires don’t need replacing yet.
- If Lincoln’s hair on the top of his head is partially visible, it’s time to start shopping for tires.
- If the very top of Lincoln’s head or the copper above it is visible, replace your tires immediately.
Another way to tell is to look at your vehicle’s tread wear bars–these are the small bridges that form between your treads. As your tires wear, these bars will become flush with the tire’s tread. When this happens, it’s time to schedule your next appointment to see us!
